About Us
Local and Friendly Singing Group
We are a mixed group of women and men and we sing for sheer enjoyment. The aim of the group is just to enjoy singing once a week with other people who love to sing and have fun.
As we are a friendly crew and we appreciate the time we have each week to catch up and have a chat with other members.
There is no need to read music as the majority of us use ‘words only’ song sheets and there is no need to have any type of singing experience, not even singing in the shower!
We are based in St Mary’s Church in West Bergholt however we are not affiliated to the church and are grateful to the church for allowing us to use their premises.
We have been some making some changes to the choir and one of the more important ones was a change in name. Going forward our new name is Vocal Zone Singers.
Singing
We like to sing a variety of songs sometimes they are songs suggested by our Musical Director sometimes they are suggested by members of our singing group.
The songs showcase music over time from the 1950s for example through to current songs. Some of the songs are chosen from shows and films, we always like to sing a folk song and depending on our concerts, song choice could follow a theme such as our concert for the RLNI.
At Christmas we add carols to that list!
Fun
We are definitely not a ‘serious’ choir! Although we have organised several concerts and events there is no pressure to ‘perform’, it is very much a free choice.
It is understood that people have busy lives and cannot always make such a commitment.
We just want everyone to enjoy their weekly singing session, whatever their ability or levels of commitment. The emphasis is on fun.
Free Tasters
Our group offers a free taster night for potential new members.
There is no need for auditions – enthusiasm is far more important! Just come along, say ‘Hi’ and meet other members.
The aim is just to enjoy singing and have fun.
Our musical director is Joanna Arnold
Choir Leader, Singer, Vocal Coach
I am a classically trained singer though I enjoy performing music of all genres. My conducting career began whilst studying music at the University of York where I conducted the Zamar Gospel Choir. Since completing my Masters at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance
I have regularly performed in the Opera Holland Park and Philharmonia Chorus. I teach singing and have conducted many choirs across London, as well as being an oratorio soloist. I returned to Colchester last year following the birth of my son and am excited to have this opportunity to
lead this group of singers.
Our Chair Person
Julia Richardson
I have lived in West Bergholt village with my family, for just over 5 years. I joined the Vocal Zones choir in 2021 as well as being a member of the local WI and other groups. I enjoy music, travel, the theatre, gardening and socialising.
Our New Members Coordinator
Bev Allen
Bev has been a member of Vocal Zones since its inception, five years ago. She has been a committee member for a number of years and one aspect of her current role is to welcome new members. If you would like to join the choir or just pop in for a taster session Bev will be there to say ‘Hi’ and look after you. She also prepares and sources music/song sheets for choir members.
Bev lives in Wormingford and enjoys long dog walks, gardening and as many gym sessions a week as she can fit in!
